How to subscribe to Genesis Edge, C-MAP’s premium mapping service

Genesis Edge is a premium upgrade to the free marine-mapping service C-MAP Genesis (formerly known as Insight Genesis). While the free version allows downloads of community-sourced digital Social Map charts and custom-color depth shading, Genesis Edge offers even more. Its key features include sonar replay, the option to keep personally mapped areas private and creation of your own bottom-hardness and submerged-vegetation map layers. No matter where you fish, or what species you target, those features are game-changers.

This article includes instructions for subscribing to Genesis Edge, as well as more information about how you can use Genesis Edge features to catch more and bigger fish.

Note: The “Plans” page at www.genesismaps.com does not include a place to enter your credit card information and purchase a premium Genesis Edge subscription. To purchase an Edge subscription, you must first register for a free Genesis account, log in and then navigate to the bottom of the “Account” page in your Dashboard and click “Upgrade.” Full step-by-step directions follow. 

Step-by-Step Directions For Subscribing to Genesis Edge

1. Visit the URL www.genesismaps.com
2. If you are new to C-MAP Genesis — you’ve never had a free Insight Genesis, C-MAP Genesis, or GoFree Hooked account — first click the blue “Sign Up Free” button at the top, right-hand corner of the http://www.genesismaps.com homepage and then follow the prompts for entering your email address and creating a password. (Proceed to Step 4) If you have a coupon code for a free Genesis Edge subscription, this is your first step
3. If you already have — or previously have had — a  free C-MAP Genesis, Insight Genesis, or GoFree Hooked account, log in to the C-MAP Genesis dashboard with your email address and password. If you know your password, proceed to Step 4. If you forgot your password, follow the steps below to create a new password.
   • Forgot your password? No worries, do this:
     1. Click “Forgot password?” in the log-in window
     2. Type your email address into the entry field in the “Reset Your Password” pop-up box that opens 
     3. Click “Submit”
     4. Open the email you receive from noreply@dms.c-map.com and copy the new password you are provided. It will be something ridiculously long, like this: k5ErG2b6CtYHyRH2dYPu. But don’t worry, this password can be temporary. We’ll teach you below to change it to something you can remember
     5. Highlight and copy your temporary password. Well, you could memorize, but who are we kidding, that’s how we got in this jam in the first, place, eh?
     6. Refresh your Log-in page and then copy your temporary password into the appropriate field in the “Sign In” box
     7. To update your password to something you will remember, follow these steps:
        • Click the “Account” button at the top, right-hand corner of your dashboard
        • Paste your temporary password into the “Current Password” entry field on the page
        • Type your new password into both the “New Password ” and “Confirm New Password” entry fields
        • Click “Submit”
4. After logging in with your email and current password, click the “Account” button at the top, right-hand corner of your dashboard, then click “SIGN IN”
5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the header “Current Plan” and click “Upgrade”  (as shown in image below)
6. Choose an annual or monthly Genesis Edge subscription by clicking the appropriate circle
7. Fill in your credit card information
8. If you have a discount coupon code, enter it in the box entry field labeled “Coupon Code” and then click the “Apply Coupon” button.
9. Click “Subscribe”

Now you can create your own custom, private fishing maps with bottom-hardness and submerged vegetation layers.

Bottom Hardness Layer
Fish love hard bottoms. They feed on ‘em, breed on ‘em, follow their edges like roads.  With a Genesis Edge bottom-hardness map, you can easily target the most-productive, hard-bottom portions of classic spot-on-the-spot areas of offshore structure like ledges, sunken islands, saddles and more.

“A real critical factor in fishing today is your map,” says Alabama bass pro Jordan Lee, who won the 2017 Bassmaster Classic this spring on Lake Conroe in Texas. “And C-MAP Genesis has come out with this bottom-hardness feature that’s really cool. I’ve used it on several different lakes and it’s helped me catch more fish.”

Genesis Edge makes hard-bottom areas stick out like “Fish Here!” signs on your map. It overlays onto your contour lines a color-coded representation of the size, shape and location of areas of different bottom hardness: dark orange areas show the hardest bottom; a lighter orange indicates the next-hardest bottom; tan is the next-hardest bottom; and pale yellow shows the softest-bottom areas.

New Jersey bass pro Michael Iaconelli placed 6^th in the 2017 Classic, having put himself in a position to win with a game-plan that included using the bottom-hardness layer of a Genesis Edge map. He caught key fish from offshore spots that anglers not using the map were driving over and past.

“These are spots that are small, little hard spots that are staging spots,” he explains. “They’re places where fish stop when they’re going in to spawn, but even more, they’re places they stop going out. C-MAP Genesis is really cool stuff. And the thing I love about it – which is so key in the post-spawn – is the hard-bottom layer.”

Submerged Vegetation Layer
It’s no secret that big fish ambush baitfish in submerged vegetation. What’s not always known however, is where the good green stuff is, and what areas within it likely hold the most fish. In most weather and water conditions, submerged vegetation is not visible to the naked eye, so you have to go searching for it. And even when you see a patch on your sonar screen, you won’t know its full size, shape or thickness.

Genesis Edge’s vegetation layer, however, shows fish-holding holes in vast grass flats, depicts fish-populated points and inside-turns on deep weedlines, and more. Atop your blue-scaled contour map, it places bright-green overlays the size and shape of areas of submerged vegetation, making it as easy to see the best places to cast as when you’re throwing to visible cover like docks and laydowns.

“Because I map all the deep weedlines in my area lakes, when my clients are trolling I can see exactly where all the inside and outside turns are on the weed edge,” says in-demand Minnesota walleye guide Scott Merwin. “That allows me to keep my clients’ baits always in the strike zone and free from hangs ups. That’s a big part of why they catch more and bigger fish out of my boat.”
