Once only a feature available in paid Premium Insight Genesis subscriptions, downloadable Social Map charts are now free to all subscribers, following a service upgrade earlier this month. Another free new feature is a dazzling contour color palette that displays Insight Genesis and Social Map charts on a chartplotter with the same blue-scale, depth-shading available previously only in online versions of the maps.
Additional upgrades include options to display all Insight Genesis maps in metric measurements on chartplotters – and the ability to toggle between metric and imperial formats – and to make maps with both High CHIRP sonar or the traditional 200 kHz signal.
“With our enhanced Insight Genesis offering, we are breaking the cartography mold,” says Navico CEO Leif Ottosson. “We now offer free high-quality mapping for multifunction displays with unparalleled options for recording data and creating unmatched contour charts. Plus with our premium service, advanced users have access to an unrivaled feature set and powerful chart attributes they are sure to love.”

Insight Genesis is the GoFree service that anglers and other boaters use to make custom one-foot contour maps of un-mapped bodies of water, improve contour detail on previously mapped waters, and to discover areas of interest not charted on off-the shelf maps, including reefs and shoals, sunken islands and holes, humps and hard-bottom areas. With a compatible chartplotter, no additional hardware is needed to use Insight Genesis – it creates maps from signals sent by the transducer already on your boat.* GoFree, an industry-leading provider of digital content and services, is the newest company in the Navico family of marine electronics brands, which also comprises Lowrance, Simrad Yachting and B&G.
Mapping your favorite fishing waters with Insight Genesis – be a 300-acre pond or potential hotspots on a 30,000-acre reservoir – is not only easy, it’s beneficial to both you and the wider fishing community. Anglers across the U.S. and Canada have been holding “mapping parties” to improve the contour charts for their favorite fishing waters. A dozen anglers can map a thousand acres in a little more than an hour. The combined results of a community effort is full map available via Insight Genesis Social Map.
For anglers and boaters that travel often to distant new waters, Social Map has already become an indispensable tool. From it, they can quickly and effortlessly download free, detailed contour maps of thousands of water bodies, including those close to home, across the country, and around the globe. Built on a base layer of existing contour charts, Social Map refreshes itself in near real-time with current sonar data shared by the Insight Genesis community, revealing new fishing holes for anglers in never-before-seen detail.
You can harness the power of Insight Genesis for yourself with a free account or a Premium subscription. With either, you can create, use online and on the water, and save to the cloud, both custom and Social Map charts; contribute sonar data; create, edit and store waypoints; manually adjust water-level offsets; and analyze weather trends.
With a Premium subscription, you can also create unique bottom-hardness and vegetation-location maps, and can choose to mark your maps as private for personal use only. No matter which option you choose, your trails, waypoints and other personal data are always kept private.
