Insight Genesis empowers you to make and use custom lake maps from sonar logs recorded with the Lowrance, Simrad or B&G sonar unit already on your boat. To make your custom contour map, you don’t have to survey a lake all at once, driving back and forth and never wetting a line. Instead, you can simply record a sonar log every time you hit the water to fish. Over time, your uploads of data collected in multiple fishing trips will come together to form a master map, full of detailed, one-foot contour lines that identify fish-holding structure.
“Ever since I started using Insight Genesis, I’ve found a lot of good fishing spots on Lake Osakis that didn’t show up on other maps,” says Minnesota fishing guide Scott Merwin. “And I’ve been fishing Osakis for 15 years!”
The owner and sole operator of Osakis Guide Service, Merwin doesn’t have the luxury of hitting the water too often without a client aboard. But that doesn’t stop him from mapping Lake Osakis one guide trip at a time.
“I record a sonar log pretty much whenever I’m on the water,” he says. “Because if I drive over a hump or hole I didn’t know was there before, later I can just upload the file to my Genesis account, and then I’ll I’ve the exact contours of it on my map. And the next time I’m out with a client, he might catch a bunch of fish off it.”
Or Merwin himself might be the one to catch a whopper with Insight Genesis. Like he did last fall.
“I caught a 30-inch walleye and it was because of Insight Genesis,” he says.
Looking at a portion of the north end of the lake he’d mapped, he noticed a point extending from an underwater bar. It had a perfect transition of hard bottom and soft bottom,” he explains. “And I never even noticed it was there before.” Convinced the spot had to be holding a good fish or two, he idled around above it and soon noticed a huge fish on his Lowrance Structure Scan display.
“Here’s this big fish, just sitting in one spot,” he recalls. “So I just keep going over her, and eventually she hits and I bring her in. I wouldn’t have even known about that spot if it weren’t for Insight Genesis.”
Merwin and his guide clients aren’t the only ones that can benefit from his mapping efforts on Lake Osakis and other area lakes. Merwin has contributed hundreds of acres of sonar logs to the new Insight Genesis Social Map.
An online database of contour maps generated and shared by the Lowrance community, Social Map allows you to quickly and effortlessly get detailed contour maps of waters close to home, across the country, and around the globe. Built on a base layer of existing contour charts, Social Map refreshes itself in near real-time with sonar data shared by the Insight Genesis community, revealing new fishing holes for anglers in never-before-seen detail.
You can harness the power of Insight Genesis for yourself with a free account or a premium subscription. With either, you can create, use and save unlimited custom and social maps online; contribute sonar data; create, edit and store waypoints; manually adjust water-level offsets; and analyze weather trends.
Premium subscribers can load their custom maps and Social Map charts onto their compatible* Lowrance Elite HDI, HDS, Simrad NS Series or B&G Zeus GPS or chartplotters for use on the water.
